We have had a great start to our school year this week in grade 3! Everyone is settling in nicely to our class and great efforts have been made to follow our classroom rules and routines. We have a great bunch of students and we look forward to continuing to get to know and work with each student as the year progresses. This week we got a chance to work with each student and gather information on their current levels in all subject areas.
This week in Math, we will be starting our first unit on "Numbers to 1000". During this unit we will be looking at place value of numerals, comparing and ordering numbers, counting by 5's, 10's, 25's and 100's, working with coins, counting by 3's and 4's, and estimating and counting numbers to 1000. Many different manipulatives will be used in class to help each student grasp and excel with each concept. These manipulatives include 100's Charts, Place Value mats, number lines, play/real money, counters, interlocking cubes, and base ten blocks.
In Language Arts students will continue to work with Mrs. Pomeroy on selecting "Good Fit" books for themselves while completing their Daily 5 program. Last week the class started to build a word wall, which will be displayed in the classroom. The words on this wall will be used in place of a spelling program.
This Monday (Sept. 12th) homework for our class will begin. Homework will include reading with your child nightly, finishing up any missed work from class, as well as some math worksheets. Math worksheets will be sent home with your child each Monday, and we ask that they be completed and returned no later than Thursday of each week. This allows you the freedom to work with your child on concepts they may struggle with at more suitable times throughout the week. We also ask that you please sign your child's reading log in addition to the signing their agendas daily. Please feel free to use your child's agenda as a way to communicate with both of us. Just leave us a note and we will find an appropriate way to respond to you.
A school newsletter was sent home along with a Student Information sheet that we need to have signed, changed (or corrected if need be) as soon as possible so we can update our student's files.
In our grade 3 class, we have set up small scale form of a Breakfast Program. This is where we allow students to receive and refill a Ziploc baggie with dry cereal each day. We know that not everyone remembers, or has the time, to always eat breakfast every day, so we decided to provide them with this opportunity at school. As this program progresses it would be greatly appreciated if we could request some cereal box donations from any avenue.
A reminder to all about the Open House this Monday evening, Sept. 12th at 6:30 beginning in the gym. From there, parents and guardians are welcome into our classroom (Room 122) to find out a little more about us, the routines we will follow, and the programs that we will be working with in our classroom. We look forward to seeing you and hope you can stop in for a visit!
Finally, we want to wish a very happy birthday to our friends Morgan and Kaden who celebrate their birthdays in September!
