Week 3: September 19 - 23

A reminder that Grade 3 pictures will be taken this Monday, September 19!

In Math, Grade 3 started looking at place value this week and worked with base ten blocks.  They also had their first of many mental math session, where they showed their skills on doubles (4+4, 30+30, 700+700). We will look at doubles plus one next in our mental math.  When we look at 4 + 5, we can think of the double of 4, which is 8, and add 1 to get 9 (4+4+1=9). This week, we will be looking at the different ways to record numbers. These will include:

Standard Number Form (using the digits): 735 = 735
Base-ten Name: 735 = 7 hundreds, 3 tens, 5 ones
Expanded Notation: 735 = 700 + 30 + 5
Picture Form: Draw numbers based on a selected objects, usually base 10 blocks.
Written Form: 735 = seven hundred thirty-five (NOTE: we do not use the word "and" when saying or writing our numbers, as it stands for a decimal point in the later years!)

In Health last week we talked about stress, stressful situations, and the signs that our body uses to tell us that we are stressed.  This week we will continue talking about stress and link it to anger.  Furthermore we will discuss appropriate steps to take to relieve anger and how to avoid conflicts.

This week in Writer's Workshop we will be focusing on the text type RETELL.  A RETELL in writing retells or recounts past experiences, events and/or lives of people.  Students will experience this text type through Read Alouds, Shared Reading and Modelled, Shared and Guided/Independent Writing sessions. The students are "off & on their way" in the Buddy Study program.  Words to learn have been carefully selected and students will begin focusing on their word activities.

Please help your child remember to record in his/her reading log each evening.  We also ask that you please sign the log after your child has read to you.  Remember Math homework is due on Thursday!

Thank you so much for your support!
