Week 7: October 17-19

This week in Math students will continue to work on skip counting by 3's and 4's.  This is a difficult concept and all children would benefit from practice at home.  Some examples may to practice this concept at home are:

Count by 3's =  9, 12, ___ , 18; and start at 270, count BACK by 3s to 252.
Count by 4's = 4, 8, 12,     , 20; and start at 172, count BACK by 4s to 140.

We began this topic on Friday and the students were grasping the patterns and "rules" to skip counting with 3's quite nicely! We have been using our hundreds charts with this concept, but we hope to be able to do the skip counting mentally as we move foward.

In Health students began to look at the different kinds of conflicts that they may or may have already faced in their lives. We will continue to look at these different situations and develop personal strategies to deal with personal conflicts in relationships.

We have begun meeting in groups during our Literacy blocks this week.  The students are bringing home books to read that we have discussed and read in these groups.  Please ensure that the books come back and forth to school each day as we need them for in-class activities.  A reading strategy to practice this week while reading at home girls and boys is "Back Up & Re-read".

Tuesday morning (October 18), we will be having a Pep Rally for Athena's soccer teams who are going to the Provincials. Students may buy a raffle ticket for a chance to win a soccer ball.  The cost is $0.50 and is due Monday morning.

There will be NO SCHOOL on Thursday and Friday (October 20 & 21) due to the annual PEI Teachers Federation Convention.  So we hope you all enjoy your 4 day long weekend!  It would be great if you could read with your child and practice their basic math facts with them during this time!
