Week 9: October 31 - November 4

Happy Halloween everyone!  We hope you all have a safe and happy time trick or treating Monday night!

In Math, students finished up their first Unit on Numbers to 1000 on Friday!  Way to go!  It was a long unit, and it's concepts and skills will be continuously practiced throughout the rest of the year in our classroom.  We will be starting our second unit on Data Analysis this week.  Students will learn how to collect, graph, and interpret first hand and second hand data. At home you could look for examples of different graphs in newspapers, magazines, or on the internet, and have students create and answers questions about them.

We have wrapped up our first Health unit on Relationships last week as well!  We will be moving into a new Science unit surrounding "Invisible Forces".  This unit focuses on magnetism and static electricity.  It is full of wonderful hands on experiments which I am positive the students will enjoy working with and learning from!

In Literacy, we will be reviewing the reading strategies taught thus far:  Check for Understanding (Comprehension), Back Up and Reread (Comprehension), Good Fit Books (Accuracy) and Cross Checking (Accuracy).  The students review and practice these strategies in their daily reading at school.  We encourage that they "use" and discuss these strategies with you as they read at home.

Our school Halloween Day will be held tomorrow (Monday October 31).  Students may wear their costumes to school, but are NOT permitted to wear masks or bring in "weapons" with their costumes.  Costumes must be worn to school and if the student's face is painted, it must be done before they arrive.  Please feel free to bring in snacks or treats, as we will be having some Halloween fun in the afternoon!  Please be mindful of our school's Nut Free Policy, and also be aware of the sensitivities of being gluten free when preparing treats for the entire class! :)

The Scholastic Book Fair will open on Thursday November 3, and run until Wednesday November 9. Students will have a chance to view and purchase books during those times.

Please check your child's agenda each and every night for homework assignments and notes.  We would really appreciate it if you could initial it as well so that we know you have seen the agenda and read the notices, etc.  A notice went home this week regarding preferred interview times.  Please complete it and send it back to us as soon as possible so that we can try to accommodate your requests for certain times/dates.

On that note, Parent-Teacher Conferences (interviews) are next Tuesday, November 8 in the evening and Wednesday, November 9th throughout the day.  Since the BOOK FAIR will be open during these times, we will not be sending home a November Book Order from Scholastic.

Finally, thank you for your continuous support and thank you for all of the Halloween goodies sent in on Monday! Looking forward to seeing you next week!
