Week 11: November 14 - 18
This is National Anti-Bullying Week! Let's all do our best to prevent, resolve, and eliminate bullying in our own communities! Check out http://www.pacerkidsagainstbullying.org/
We would like to thank all of the Parents for coming to Parent-Teacher Conferences last week. It was great meeting with all of you! We hope that you all got the chance to read your child's Retell from the Class Book of Retell Texts.
This week in Literacy, as a class, we will be zeroing in on the strategy "Flip the Sounds" which will enhance the accuracy of student reading. "Flip the Sounds" means that when someone is reading and comes to a word they are stuck on, if they read K-a-t-e with a short A (so what they read sounds like cat) they need to flip the short 'a' sound for a long 'a' sound, to see which is the right word - which sound sounds right in the sentence?
In writing, we will be beginning the text form known as "Procedural Writing". We see this form of writing all around us in our daily lives - directions/instructions, recipes, "How-To" manuals, rules to games, etc. The students will have many opportunities to view, hear and of course write in this specific text form. It's usually a favorite that we can have lots of fun with!
In Math this week, students will continue to work with data. They are getting really good at looking at graphs and plots and analyzing the data they see. This week we will focus on reading and creating bar graphs. Please continue to work on the basic addition facts with your child. If they have mastered them, then you can move onto the basic subtraction facts.
In Science this week, students will complete their first experiment with magnets, where they will predict and then test a variety of objects to see what sorts of things can be picked up by magnets. We will then move right into our second experiment that deals with the idea of magnets attracting ALL metal objects. Students will predict and record their thoughts on this concept.
Important Upcoming Dates to Remember:
