Week 13: November 28 - December 2

In Literacy this week, the reading strategy the whole group will work on to increase fluency will be "Voracious Reading" - to be encouraged to be eager readers and to practice reading because by practising reading, we get better at it!  In Writing we will be beginning to listen to and look at the many different forms of Procedural ("How To") texts.  As well, please be looking for a special invitation in your child's agenda later on this week, to invite you to sign up, come in and read aloud one of your favourite Christmas stories to our class.  This is one of the children's favourite times!

In Math students wrapped up their unit on Data Analysis last week, and this week we will move into Addition and Subtraction. This unit will focus on: using specific strategies to recall basic addition and subtraction facts; identifying and applying relationships between addition and subtraction; adding and subtracting 2 digit and 3 digit numbers; using mental math; and estimating sums and differences.  There are many activities that you can engage with your child at home.  You can help them practice their basic addition and subtraction facts nightly, you could play "Store" where your child adds and subtracts costs to buying items, or you could use dice and have your child practice adding or subtracting the numbers they roll (also could be done with a deck of cards!)

In Science we will learn how to make our own magnets and look at the polarity (North and South ends) of magnets.  Students will work on creating a piece of Procedural writing as they attempt to create their own magnets this week.
