Week 18: January 9-13

Welcome to 2012!! We are looking forward to starting our new year off with an explosion of learning!!

This week in Math, students will continue their work on addition and subtraction.  Students have been working with adding two digit numbers (with and without regrouping) concretely, pictorially, and mentally.  We will begin the week by looking at the addition of three digit numbers (with and without regrouping).  By the end of the week we will be moving onto subtraction and looking at estimating differences (rounding and front end estimation) and subtracting two digit numbers (with and without borrowing).  Students also began working on creating their own story problems last week, and we will be working on composing a class book that houses a collection of these story problems for others to try!

We started our new Social Studies unit last week, and the students enthusiasm and knowledge is outstanding!  Our first chapter focuses on the geography surrounding where Prince Edward Island is located in the world.  We gathered known information about PEI last week, and this week we will move into working with maps and identifying and locating where PEI is on a variety of maps, as well as how to read and give directions.  We will also be working with cardinal directions, relative locations, and scales.

In Literacy, students have wrapped up their work on Procedural Writing by publishing their first piece of work to be on display in the hallway! Next they will be taking a closer look at Persuasive Writing.  In this form of writing, students will choose particular topics and try to persuade their audience with convincing arguments!  A reading strategy that we will zero in on this week is "Tune Into Interesting Words". We will also be looking at using these "interesting" words in our daily writing and dialogue.
