We can't believe March will be here this week! Happy Leap Year everyone!
This week is Bullying Awareness Week and we are encouraged to wear Pink on Wednesday! During the week we will work with our class and school to raise awareness about bullying, by talking about its signs, its effects and consequences, and how to respond to it. Our school guidance counsellor, Mr. Matheson, will also be making presentations to each classroom about bullying and its effects, prevention, and ways to help. As a school we will work to create a school wide collage using hand prints. The purpose of this collage is to draw students' attention to the importance of staying united against bullying. We will also be participating in a Peace Walk around the school, starting at 2:30 on Friday afternoon. For more information on bullying awareness, check out this website: www.redcross.ca/StandUp
In Math last week, we finished up our unit on measurement. Students ended the week off by completing a measurement booklet. This week we will have a short measurement quiz on Monday before we begin our next unit on Patterning. In this unit students will:
- Identify, extend, create, and compare increasing AND decreasing patterns.
- Find pattern rules.
- Display number patterns on hundreds charts.
- Use patterns to solve problems.
At home you can look for patterns in your family's activities as marked on a calendar. Look at activities you do daily, twice a week, every week, etc. Use small objects like buttons or coins to make patterns that grow or shrink, get your child to extend them. Count money by skip counting and find geometric patterns on floor tiles or on game boards.
Please continue to practice the basic math facts with your child each night. We will begin working on multiplication and division after March Break, and the basic knowledge of repeated addition and subtraction is key to your child's success!
In Social Studies we are going to look at the different types of vegetation in the Atlantic Region and examine our regional climate throughout the year. Students are working to complete postcards to describe their interpretation of why PEI, NB, NS, and Nfld. are classified as the Atlantic Region in Canada.
In Literacy, we are getting ready for report cards by doing reading and writing assessments with our students. Please continue to read daily/nightly with your child at home!
