Week 28: March 26-30

Welcome back!  We hope you all had an enjoyable and restful March Break!

This week in Math, we will begin our unit on Multiplication and Division. I will be sending home a sheet that will help you practice the facts up to 5 x 5. The focus of this unit is to develop an understanding of the processes of multiplication and division (essentially repeated addition and repeated subtraction), in order to develop strategies for multiplying and dividing whole numbers up to 5 x 5.  Students will work with manipulatives such as counters, numbers lines, and arrays to develop their understanding. At home you can work with your child to look for things that come in groups of 2, 3, 4, and 5 and create story problems with them. For example: Bikes have 2 tires. How many tires are on 4 bikes? You can also use a deck of cards to practice multiplication.  The first card you pick up will represent the number of groups, the second card will represent the number of objects in each group.  Your child may simply answer, or draw pictures to match the card, and write a multiplication or division sentence to match the picture (2 x 3 = 6 or 15 / 3 = 5).

In this unit students will:
- Model and find strategies for multiplication and division up to 5 x 5
- Pose and solve story problems involving multiplication and division.

Hints to remember:
- You can multiply numbers in any order.
- Any number multiplied by zero will ALWAYS equal ZERO! (3 x 0 = 0)
- Any number multiplied by one will ALWAYS equal the original number! (4 x 1 = 4)
- Any number multiplied by two will equal DOUBLE of the original number! (5 x 2 = 10)
- Multiplication and division are related.

In Social Studies students will finish up their acrostic poems on PEI's features and continue to work on creating their imaginary island with a coordinating map legend/key.

In Literacy we will be beginning a new form of writing - Descriptive Reports.  In this study, students will learn the characteristics of a descriptive report, through read alouds, modeled, and shared writing.  They will have the opportunity to complete some research and write their own descriptive reports.  A friendly reminder to parents to ask your child questions about what they are reading, after they have read aloud to you!
