Week 4: September 26 - 30

Thank you Grade 3 for being so diligent with returning your signed Reading Logs and agendas each day! In Literacy, the children are learning how to choose "Good Fit" books for their daily reading.  We have been focusing on the criteria that one must use in order to choose books that are appropriate for his/her reading level/abilities.  We use the acronym "I PICK":

I=  I look at a book.
P= Purpose - Why am I reading?  For fun, to find out information on a topic, etc.
I= Interest - Do I love a particular author?  A particular genre?
C= Comprehension - Do I understand what I am reading?
K= Know the words - Can I read the words?

With some guidance, the children have been choosing their own books for nightly reading.  There will be times in which I assign a particular book and times in which the students have their choice of what to read.  Often the same book will come home for more then one night.  The children will know if it is sent home again to work on a particular reading strategy (for fluency, comprehension, etc.).

In Math, students will continue to work on writing and recording numbers in different ways this week.  They will also begin to look at comparing (greater than >, less than <, and equal to =) and ordering (least to greatest, and greatest to least) numbers to 1000. Please remember to work with your child on practicing their basic fact skills (addition of doubles, doubles plus 1, doubles plus 2, etc) at home, using the handout provided at the Open House.  Students will complete a quiz on Friday to show what they have learned so far.

We will continue to examine strategies used to cope with anger in Health. We will review steps to control anger and look at different ways to express anger that does not put down others.

A reminder that the Terry Fox Run is set to take place on Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 28).  A big thank you goes out to those who chose to donate $5 to Terry's dream to cure cancer!   With that $5, students get the chance to pie a teacher that afternoon!  Other donations to this cause will still be accepted.

Thank you so much for all of the cereal donations that have been coming in!

We hope you all have a great week!
